About
An excavation and septic crew based in Mayetta, Kansas
We do the dirt work that keeps a rural place running — digging, moving earth, installing and fixing septic systems, running water and sewer, grading, laying rock, and building the walls that hold Kansas ground.
Dylan Busey & Co Excavation is an excavation contractor based in Mayetta,Kansas. We take on the full range of dirt work — general excavation, new construction site prep, grading and site leveling, trenching, gravel driveways and rock installation, septic system installation and repair, sewer and water lines, drain tile, cattle waterers and livestock water lines, limestone retaining walls and rock work, brush and fence line clearing, debris removal, and pet burial services.
We work for acreage and farm owners, homeowners, homebuilders and general contractors, commercial property owners, and realtors and property managers. The jobs run from a single backed-up septic to a full site prep for a new build, and we handle both the same way — we look at the ground, we tell you what it takes, and we do the work.
The equipment is sized to the job. We bring the machine that fits the dig and the access — a big machine for a building pad, a smaller one for a tight trench in a finished yard. We run the rock, the trucks, and the tools to get a job done start to finish, and we clean up the site when we leave.
We cover 8 counties in Northeast Kansas — Jackson, Shawnee, Jefferson, Brown, Atchison, Doniphan, Nemaha, Osage. Osage County and Doniphan County sit about an hour out from our base, so work there gets scheduled rather than squeezed into the same week. Everywhere else we work the week as the jobs come in.

How to hire an excavation contractor in Kansas
Honest advice for anyone hiring dirt work — whether you hire us or someone else.
Ask for proof of insurance
Any contractor running heavy equipment on your property should carry liability insurance that covers damage to your place and to the people on the site. Ask to see a certificate of insurance before work starts. If a contractor can't or won't show you one, that's a red flag — not because the work is dangerous every day, but because the one day something goes wrong is the day you'll wish they had it.
Ask about county certification for septic work
Septic systems are regulated at the county level in Kansas. Most counties require a permit, a soil evaluation, and an inspection for a new system or a replacement, and many require the installer to be on the county's approved list or to hold a specific certification for that county. Before you hire anyone for septic work, ask whether they're set up to do the work in your county — not just any county. A contractor who's approved in one county may not be in the next one over. Call your county's environmental or sanitation department and ask what they require. It's your system and your permit.
Ask who is calling in the utility locates
Before anyone digs a trench for water, sewer, electric, or any line, the buried utilities have to be located. In Kansas that's a call to the one-call system — Kansas 811 — and the utilities come out and mark their lines. Ask the contractor who's calling in the locate. If the answer is "nobody" or "we'll just be careful," find a different contractor. Hitting a buried gas line or an electric service is how people get hurt and how a small job turns into a disaster. The locate is free and it's the law.
A few more things worth asking
Ask how they handle rock or wet ground when they find it — a straight answer tells you whether they've seen it before. Ask who's on the site and who's running the machine. Ask what they do with the spoil and the debris. And ask for the quote in writing so you know what's included and what runs the cost up if the ground changes. None of these are trick questions — a contractor who does the work can answer them plainly.
We're happy to answer every one of these for your job. Call us and ask.
