Limestone Retaining Walls and Rock Work in Northeast Kansas

Limestone retaining walls, rock work, and erosion control built to hold back Kansas ground.

Limestone retaining walls and rock work is building the stone that holds back Kansas ground — a retaining wall on a hillside, an erosion control wall along a ditch or a creek, a rock bank for a driveway cut, or a terrace wall that turns a steep slope into something you can use. We use local limestone, set it to hold, and build it to last.

A retaining wall starts below grade. We dig a trench for the base course, set it level and compacted, and build up from there — each course of stone set back into the bank, locked to the one below, with the weight of the wall and the stone holding the dirt back. Drainage behind the wall matters as much as the stone — water has to get out or it pushes the wall over. We set the drainage and the backfill so the wall holds.

Limestone is the right rock for this part of Kansas because it's local, it's heavy, and it locks together. We use dimensioned limestone for a clean stacked wall or random flagstone for a more rustic look, and we set the stone to the style and the purpose of the wall. A wall along a drive, a wall holding a yard, and a wall on a creek bank all get built to what they have to do.

Erosion control is where rock work earns its keep on a rural property. A creek bank that's washing out, a ditch that's cutting back into a field, a slope that's sliding — we set rip-rap or build a limestone wall to stop the loss and hold the ground. It's heavier stone set to take the water, not to look pretty, and it's what keeps a creek from eating your pasture.

The cost tracks the length and the height of the wall, the size of the stone, how much base and drainage the wall needs, how far the rock has to be hauled, and how much cut and fill goes with the wall. A short garden wall is one job; a tall wall holding a driveway cut is another. We look at the bank, the load, and the drainage and tell you what it takes.

Tell us what the wall has to hold back, where it is, and what it's up against — a hillside, a creek, a drive. We'll come look at the ground and give you a straight answer on the stone, the base, and the drainage it takes to last.

What affects the cost

We don't quote a number without seeing the ground. These are the things that change what a job takes — call us and we'll give you a real answer for your place.

  • Length and height of the wall and the total stone required
  • The size and type of limestone — dimensioned versus field stone
  • Base depth and drainage behind the wall — water has to get out
  • How far the stone has to be hauled to the site
  • How much cut and fill goes with the wall and the access for the machine

What to have ready before you call

  • What the wall is holding back — a hillside, a yard, a drive, a creek bank
  • The length and the height you have in mind
  • Whether it's a retaining wall, erosion control, or decorative rock work
  • The style you want — clean stacked stone or a rustic field-stone look
  • What the wall is up against — water, a load, a slope

What happens on the day

We dig the base trench, set the first course level and compacted, and build up course by course with each stone set back into the bank and locked to the one below. We put drainage and backfill behind the wall so water doesn't build up and push it over. We set the cap stone, clean the face, and shape the grade above and below so water sheds away. We leave the wall solid and the site clean.

Limestone Retaining Walls and Rock Work — questions

The things folks ask us about limestone retaining walls and rock work in Northeast Kansas.

A single-stacked limestone wall holds to about 3 or 4 feet. Taller walls need to be stepped back, benched into the bank, or engineered with a deeper base and more drainage. We build to what the height and the load call for and we tell you when a wall needs more.
