Excavation in Doniphan County, KS
Doniphan County is about an hour north of our base in Mayetta, so we schedule work here and line up jobs in the same area to make the trip count. From the river towns to the county seat in Troy, we dig sewer and water lines, build retaining walls, and move earth across the far northeast corner of Kansas.
Doniphan County sits in the far northeast corner of Kansas, where the Missouri River runs along the northern and eastern edges. The river sets the lay of the land, and the ground near it rolls and climbs into hills that fall off toward the water. Troy serves as the county seat, set back from the river on the higher ground.
The county is a mix of small river towns and the farmland that spreads out between them. Elwood sits across the Missouri River from St. Joseph, Missouri, and the other towns string out along the highways and the county roads. The hilly ground near the river is a different kind of place than the open farm ground to the west, and the excavation work changes with it.
The drive from our base in Mayetta is about an hour, so we do not squeeze Doniphan County work into the same week. We schedule it, and we line up the jobs in the same part of the county on the same trip so the drive pays for itself. Call ahead and we will plan the run with the other work near you.
The work here splits between the hills and the open ground. Near the river, it is retaining walls holding steep lots and line runs down a grade. Out on the farm ground, it is long water and sewer runs out to places set back off the road, plus gravel lanes and drainage. We handle the full range across Doniphan County.
Scheduling work an hour from home
An hour is not far, but it is far enough that we plan the trip. We do not promise same week work in Doniphan County the way we can closer to home. Instead, we put your job on the calendar and group it with the other jobs in your part of the county, so the drive makes sense for everyone. It keeps the work steady and the scheduling honest.
When you call, we will tell you straight away when we can be there and what else we have lined up in your area. We answer the phone during business hours, Monday through Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 8am to 12pm, and we get back to every message the same working day.
Holding ground on the hills near the river
The hilly ground near the Missouri River is where a limestone retaining wall does its hardest work. A driveway that cuts into a slope, a yard that drops off toward the bottomland, or a culvert headwall at a county road crossing all call for stone set right. We start the wall below grade on a leveled base and set the stone course by course. See our limestone retaining walls page for how a wall goes together.
On a sloped lot, the wall has to hold the grade and still let the water go where it should. We read the lay of the ground before we set the first stone, so the wall does its job and the drainage does not undo it. The hill is the challenge, and we work with it rather than against it.
Water and sewer runs out in the county
Out on the open ground west of the river, the work looks like our rural jobs anywhere else. A water line from the road out to a farmstead. A sewer line from the house to a tank or a county connection. A gravel lane that has washed out and needs regrading and fresh rock. The runs are long because the places are spread out, and the pipe and the rock have to travel.
Before any line goes in, we have the underground utilities marked through Kansas 811. You can read more about how a sewer line replacement runs on our sewer line installation page. On the open ground, we trench a clean, narrow cut, lay and bed the pipe, and backfill and grade the dirt so it settles back level.
The towns along the river and the roads
We cover the whole county, from Troy out to Wathena, Highland, White Cloud, Elwood, Denton, and Bendena, and the country between them. Wherever your place sits in Doniphan County, we can get there, and we will line the trip up with the other work near you.
