Excavation in Atchison County, KS
From the bluffs of Atchison to the farm ground out west, we dig sewer and water lines, build retaining walls, and move earth across Atchison County. The work changes with the ground, and this county has two kinds of it.
Atchison County sits in the northeast corner of Kansas, where the Missouri River marks the eastern line. Atchison is the county seat, and it rises up on the bluffs above the river, a town of older homes on steep streets that climb away from the water. The river sets the lay of the land along the edge of the county.
West of town, the ground flattens out into farm country. Around Effingham and Muscotah, the land opens into fields and the homes sit back off the roads on long drives. It is a different kind of place than the bluffs, and the excavation work changes with it. The county holds two kinds of ground, and we work both.
The drive from our base in Mayetta runs under an hour, close enough to run Atchison County work through the week. We group the jobs in that part of the county together so the drive pays for itself, and we line up the schedule so your job goes in with the others near it. Call ahead and we will plan the trip.
The work splits along the same line as the ground. On the bluffs in Atchison, it is retaining walls holding steep yards and old sewer lines coming out of aging homes. Out west, it is long rural water and sewer runs out to farmsteads, gravel lanes, and drainage across flat ground. We handle the full range across Atchison County.
On the bluffs in Atchison
The older homes on the bluffs sit on steep streets, and the yards drop off hard. A limestone retaining wall holds that grade and gives back level ground. We start the wall below grade on a leveled base and set the stone course by course, so it carries the weight of the slope behind it. See our limestone retaining walls page for how a wall goes together.
On a tight hillside lot, the wall has to respect the property line and the drainage at the same time. We read the lay of the lot before we set the first stone, so the wall holds the grade and the water still goes where it should. The hill is the challenge, and we work with it rather than against it.
Old sewer lines on steep yards
The aging sewer lines in the older parts of Atchison fail and have to come out. On a steep yard, the new line has to go in at the right grade, and the slope is what makes the difference between a line that works and one that does not. We cut the line, lay and bed the new pipe, and backfill and grade the ground. Before we dig, we have the underground utilities marked through Kansas 811.
You can read more about how a sewer line replacement runs on our sewer line installation page. On a tight lot, we plan the trench to keep the digging to the line and put the yard back together on the way out, so the work leaves a mark that reads like a repair, not a dig up.
Out west in the farm country
West of Atchison, around Effingham and Muscotah, the work looks like our rural jobs everywhere else. A long water line from the road out to a farmstead. A sewer line from the house to a tank or a county connection. A gravel lane that has washed out and needs regrading and fresh rock. The runs are long because the places are spread out, and the pipe and the rock have to travel.
Drainage across flat farm ground is its own job, where water collects in a low spot and has nowhere to go. We regrade the ground and run drain tile to move the water off, so a field or a yard does not turn into a pond every spring. Good grading is mostly about water, and we read the ground before we move it.
