Excavation in Jefferson County, KS

Around Perry Lake and across Jefferson County, we build limestone retaining walls, fix drainage, and run sewer and water lines on sloped ground. The work here is about holding the hill and moving the water.

Jefferson County sits west of our base, a stretch of rolling farmland, creek bottoms, and the big water of Perry Lake. Oskaloosa serves as the county seat, and the small towns of the county string out along the highways and the back roads between them. The Delaware River feeds Perry Lake, and the reservoir shapes the land and the lots around its shore.

Perry Lake is a large reservoir, and much of the land around it is federal land. The homes and cabins on the hills above the water sit on sloped lots, where the grade drops toward the lake. That kind of ground is where excavation earns its keep, because the soil, the water, and the rock all want to move downhill, and the job is to hold them in place or send them where they should go.

Oskaloosa sits roughly 40 minutes from our base in Mayetta, so we plan Jefferson County work into the week rather than squeezing it in. The drive is short enough to run through the week, and far enough that we line it up with the other jobs in that part of the county. Call ahead and we will get it on the calendar.

The work we do here falls into a few shapes. A limestone retaining wall holding a steep yard above the lake. A drain line carrying water away from a foundation on a slope. A sewer or water line run down a grade to a house or cabin. And the grading that keeps a lot from washing out in a heavy rain. We handle all of it across Jefferson County.

Holding the hill above the water

A lot on the hills around Perry Lake and Ozawkie often drops off toward the water, and that slope wants to move. A limestone retaining wall holds the grade and gives back level ground to build or sit on. We start the wall below grade on a leveled base and set the stone course by course, so it carries the weight of the hill behind it. See our limestone retaining walls page for how a wall goes together.

If your lot borders the federal land around the lake, there are rules about what can be done at that line. We check what is allowed before any work starts, so the wall and the grading go in clean and stay put. It is better to sort that out up front than to dig first and find out later.

Moving water away from the house

On a sloped lot, water runs downhill, and downhill is often straight at the house. We regrade the ground so it sheds water away from the foundation, and where grading alone is not enough, we run drain tile to carry the water off. The fix starts with reading where the water comes from and where it wants to go, then shaping the ground to send it there.

Drainage and grading go together on a lake lot. A wall holds the soil, the grade moves the water, and the drain tile carries it the rest of the way. We look at the whole picture before we move a shovel of dirt, because a fix that only handles half the water does not last a full season.

Lines run down a grade

Sewer and water lines on a sloped lot have to follow the grade, and that changes how the trench runs. We cut the line, lay and bed the pipe, and backfill and grade the ground on the way out. Before any of it goes in, we have the underground utilities marked through Kansas 811. You can read more about how a sewer line replacement works on our sewer line installation page.

A water line out to a cabin or a house on the lake runs the same way, planned to keep the digging to the line and the yard put back together when we leave. The slope is the variable, and we read it before we cut so the line goes in at the right grade.

From the lake to the county seat

We cover the whole county, from the lots around Perry Lake out to the open ground. That includes Oskaloosa, Valley Falls, Perry, Meriden, Nortonville, Winchester, and Ozawkie, and the country between them. Whether your place sits on the hill above the water or out on the flat ground, we can get there.
