Excavation in Topeka and Shawnee County, KS
About 30 minutes south of our base, we dig sewer and water lines, build retaining walls, and move earth in Topeka and across Shawnee County. In town, the work is as much about protecting the yard as it is about digging the trench.
Shawnee County holds the state capital, Topeka, and spreads out from it into the smaller towns along the highways. Topeka is the county seat, and the Kansas River runs through the county, past Silver Lake and Rossville, on its way east. The river sets the shape of the bottomland and the way the ground drains toward it.
Topeka sits roughly 30 minutes south of our base in Mayetta, close enough that we work there through the week. The lots in town are a different kind of job than a rural acreage. A Topeka lot means digging around driveways, sidewalks, trees, and the neighbor's fence, and connecting a house to the city's sewer or water main. The tight space is the whole challenge.
In town work is where protecting the yard matters as much as the trench itself. Before we cut, we read what is on the lot and plan the route that touches the least of it. Then we backfill, grade, and clean up so the property goes back together. That care is the difference between a job that tears up a yard and one that leaves it looking like work happened, not like a war did.
Out past the city, the county opens into acreages and small towns where the jobs look more like our rural work. A long water line from the road to a house. A septic system on a place outside the city sewer. A gravel lane that needs regrading. We do all of it across Shawnee County, from inside the Topeka city limits out to the edges.
Connecting to the city sewer and water
Inside Topeka, a lot of our work is tying a house to the city's sewer or water main. The line runs from the house out to the connection point, and the route has to thread past everything sitting on top of a city lot. Before we dig, we have the underground utilities marked through Kansas 811, and we check with the city on where the responsibility for the line falls. You can read more about how a sewer line replacement runs on our sewer line installation page.
A water line replacement works the same way on the other side of the lot. We plan the cut to keep the digging to the line, lay and bed the pipe, and put the ground back. The aim is the smallest trench that gets the new line in and the yard back to whole.
Holding up sloped in town lots
Topeka has its share of sloped lots, where the grade drops off toward a alley or a neighbor's line. A limestone retaining wall holds that slope and gives back usable ground. We start below grade on a leveled base and set the stone course by course. See our limestone retaining walls page for how a wall goes together from the ground up.
On a tight lot, the wall also has to respect the property line and the drainage. We read the lay of the lot before we set the first stone, so the wall holds the grade and the water still goes where it should.
Out past the city limits
West and outside Topeka, Shawnee County turns into the towns along the river and the acreages off the highways. The work out here looks more like our rural jobs. A long water line from the road to a house set back off the blacktop. A septic system where city sewer does not run. A gravel drive that has washed out and needs regrading and fresh rock.
The drive out from Mayetta runs about 30 minutes, so we plan Shawnee County work into the week rather than squeezing it in. Call ahead and we will line it up with the other jobs in your part of the county.
