Excavation in Jackson County, KS

From our home base in Mayetta, we dig sewer and water lines, build limestone retaining walls, and move earth across Jackson County. This is the shortest drive we make, and it gives you the most flexible scheduling we offer.

Jackson County sits in northeastern Kansas, a mix of open farmland, creek bottoms, and small towns strung along the highways. Holton serves as the county seat, and it is the hub where most of the county's business and trade runs through. Just east of Holton, Banner Creek Reservoir draws the land down toward the water and sets the lay of the ground nearby.

Much of the county is rural acreage and farmsteads, where the water and sewer lines run a long way from the road to the house. The ground rolls between fields and tree lines, and the drives out to a place can be a mile of gravel off the blacktop. That kind of layout is where excavation work earns its keep, because the pipe, the rock, and the grade all have to travel.

We live here. Mayetta is our base, and Holton, the county seat, is roughly 15 minutes up the road. That short drive is the one we make most, and it is the reason we hold the most flexible scheduling in Jackson County. When a job is close to home, we can move it onto the calendar without working around a long haul.

Acreage owners in the county call us for the same handful of things. A water line that has to run from the road to a house set well back off the blacktop. A sewer line from the house to a tank or a county connection. A gravel lane that has washed out and needs regrading and new rock. And a limestone retaining wall to hold a driveway cut or a slope in place. We do all of it.

Long runs from the road to the house

On a Jackson County acreage, the water and sewer lines often travel hundreds of feet from the road to the house. We trench the run in a clean, narrow cut, lay and bed the pipe, and backfill and grade the ground so it settles back level. Before any of it goes in, we have the underground utilities marked through Kansas 811. You can read more about how a sewer line replacement works on our sewer line installation page.

If you are on a septic system instead of a sewer connection, the same long runs apply to the line out to the tank and field. The length of the run is the biggest driver of the work, so the further the house sits from the road, the more line we are putting in.

Limestone walls for the slopes and driveways

The rolling ground around Holton and across the county means a lot of driveways cut into a slope or sit above a ditch. A limestone retaining wall holds that cut in place and keeps the rock and dirt from washing down. We start the wall below grade on a leveled base, then set the stone course by course. See our limestone retaining walls page for how a wall goes together from the ground up.

Walls around here also show up at culvert headwalls, where a driveway crosses a ditch. The stone frames the pipe and keeps the ends from washing out. It is honest work, and it lasts because the base is right and the stone is set, not just stacked.

Gravel lanes and grading that hold up

A long gravel drive off the county road takes a beating in a wet year. We regrade the lane, rework the crown so water runs off instead of down it, and lay fresh rock. The goal is a lane that sheds water and does not turn into a rutted mess after one rain. Grading and gravel go together on a rural place, and we handle both.

Around a building site, grading sets the ground so water moves away from the pad and the outbuildings. On a farm, it keeps a low spot from turning into a pond every spring. Good grading is mostly about water, and we read the ground before we move it.
