Trenching Services in Northeast Kansas
Narrow, clean trenches for utilities, footings, water lines, and drain tile.
Trenching is narrow, precise excavation — a clean ditch cut to a specific depth and width for a utility line, a footing, a drain tile run, or a water service. It's different from bulk excavation because the point isn't to move a lot of dirt, it's to open a trench that's the right depth and width for what's going in it, lay it straight, and leave the ground safe to backfill.
Most trenching jobs in Northeast Kansas are for water lines, sewer lines, electric service, drain tile, footing drains, or a foundation trench. Each one has a depth the code or the system calls for — water lines go below frost, sewer lines run to grade, drain tile sits at a set depth so water finds it. We cut to the depth, keep the bottom clean, and leave the spoil where it's easy to backfill.
A good trench is a straight trench at the right depth with a clean bottom. A bad trench is one that wanders, that's too shallow and freezes, or that's cut past a utility nobody located. We call the utility locate before we cut any trench for a buried line, and we never dig a utility trench blind. If you hire someone to trench and they won't call the locate, find someone else.
Trenching in clay is different from trenching in sand. Clay holds a wall and you can cut a clean narrow trench. Sand and wet ground want to cave, so the trench gets wider or gets shored. Rock means ripping or a breaker. We size the trench to the soil so it stays open and safe for whoever's laying the line.
The cost of a trench tracks the length, the depth, the soil, and what's going in it. A hundred feet of two-foot water trench in dry clay is quick. Three hundred feet of four-foot sewer in rock is a different job. We look at the run, the depth, and the ground and tell you what it takes.
Tell us the line, the length, and where it runs, and we'll come look at the ground and cut it to the right depth. We work with your plumber or your utility crew so the trench is ready when they are.

- Rock along the run, which means ripping or breaking
- Whether a utility locate is needed and what it finds
- Access — tight spaces or long soft lanes slow the machine
What to have ready before you call
- What's going in the trench — water, sewer, electric, drain tile, footing
- The length and the depth the line or the code calls for
- Where the line runs and where it ties in at each end
- Whether there are known utilities in the area
- Your plumber's or electrician's schedule so the trench is ready for them
What happens on the day
We call the locate if we haven't already, mark the line, and walk the run with you. We cut the trench to the depth and width the line calls for, keep the bottom clean, and pile the spoil alongside for backfill. We lay the line in if that's our part, or leave it open for your plumber or electrician. Once the line's in and inspected, we backfill and compact in lifts and clean up the site.
